Bacon Fest — need we say more?

September 01, 2015

That’s right, bacon lovers — get ready for a weekend full of fun and amazing food, all celebrating bacon, the candy of meat!
The Savannah Bacon Fest is back on River Street with even more local restaurants serving up their mouthwatering creations. The second annual event will take place Sept. 4–5. “The Savannah Waterfront Association was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and turnout at last year’s bacon festival, so we can’t wait to see what all of our restaurants will be dishing out this year,” said Carrie Bligh, Executive Director of the SWA.
In addition to bacon sampling, there will be plenty of activities for the family to enjoy, from toy piggy derbies to mechanical pig rides.
“We are also excited to have Hormel Black Label Bacon back this year, who will be showcasing their bacon-fueled motorcycle and offering multiple chances to win a free one-year supply of bacon,” added Bligh. So what’s on the menu (besides the obvious ingredient)? Just as a Southerner can fry just about anything, a true bacon connoisseur can work bacon into any and every dish. Here are just a few teasers: candied bacon, bacon popcorn, bacon brownies, bacon wrapped shrimp, bacon wrapped hot dogs, bacon cream soda ice cream float, bacon chips with peach jelly dip, pulled pork stuffed bacon poppers and bacon super chicken bombs. You can find these items and more served up from these local favorites: Ampersand, Andaz Savannah, Bayou Café, Cheesecake Market, Chocolat by Adam Turoni, Feather & Freight, Leopold’s Ice Cream, Savannah Rae’s Popcorn, The Naked Dog, Tondee’s Tavern, Treylor Park and Wet Willies.
Foodies can take a break from sampling to enjoy entertainment throughout the weekend. Bud Light will have their two-story build-a-bar with multiple flat screen TVs so football fans won’t miss out on watching their favorite team (like Georgia Southern, facing off against West Virginia this weekend). Live music will also take place on the Rousakis Plaza Arbor Stage on Saturday from 7–10 p.m., featuring the '80s cover band The Breakfast Club, presented by Bud Light Music.
“Our staff really wanted to have a fun band for the weekend, and we all agreed that bacon and The Breakfast Club would be the perfect combination,” Bligh said. The Savannah Bacon Fest will kick off on Friday, Sept. 4, from 4–10 p.m., with First Friday fireworks presented by Wet Willie’s Savannah at 9:30 p.m.
The festivities will continue on Saturday, Sept. 5 from 10 a.m.–10 p.m.
