What do luaus, eagles and football all have in common? Savannah's Flip Flop Tiki Bar & Grill, which is throwing a GSU Eagles Football Kickoff bash Thursday evening to get people pumped for this weekend's away game against North Carolina State.
The event, which will run from 5–
8 p.m., will be three hours of Eagle-themed entertainment. Tim Leary from Savannah radio station BOB 106.9 will be hosting GSU trivia for the night. If you need a crash course on your Eagle heritage before the season officially starts, this is the place to be. And if you already bleed blue and white and want to prove how well you know Erk and his football program, you can come smash the competition and take home great prizes. There will also be a huge raffle drawing with opportunities to earn more tickets throughout the night.
This is the first year the Flip Flop Tiki Bar & Grill has thrown a kickoff party for the Eagles, but the venue has supported GSU football since it opened in November 2011. The venue calls itself "Savannah's GSU Football Headquarters," and for good reason: it's run by two Eagle Football fans, Laney Nelms and Ben Melton.
"Me and Ben, we're both Georgia Southern alumni," Nelms said. "So from Day One we've reached out to GSU people."
The bar has hosted events to support Georgia Southern sports in the past, but this is the first time they have actively promoted an event like this, or planned something this big.
"It felt like a good thing to do, since Georgia Southern was moving up to Division 1," Nelms said.
To tempt Eagles to come celebrate the beginning of the season with them, the Flip Flop Tiki Bar & Grill is offering $3 drinks for the event, including draft beers, well liquors and wines.
And then there's all the free GSU swag you could end up bringing home. Between trivia prizes and raffle winnings, the guys at Flip Flop and Stafford Promotions, Savannah's bar crawl experts who are helping to sponsor the event, are giving away game tickets, flip flops, koozies and other GSU merchandise so you can look your best for the home games and tailgates in the coming weeks.
The event is free, but you can RSVP on the Stafford Promotions website. The first 100 people to RSVP automatically receive two raffle tickets and two koozies. You can also score additional raffle tickets by bringing in canned goods for Second Harvest Food Bank, who will be collecting at the event throughout the night.
So grab your hula skirt and your giant foam Eagles finger, because it's sure to be a fun time. Get out and GATA for Eagle football!
