Award-winning rodeo will return in April

The Statesboro Kiwanis Rodeo will arrive in mid-April, providing two nights of bulls, broncs and family entertainment.
Hedrick Rodeo Company, which has conducted the rodeo in Statesboro for the past three years, was recently recognized by the Southern Professional Rodeo Association, said Statesboro Kiwanis Club member and rodeo co-chairman Bill Anderson.
Danny Hedrick, owner of the company, said his crew was named the 2014 SPRA Stock Contractor of the Year.
A gray draft horse cross gelding, “Willie,” easily recognized as one of the company’s largest horses, won the title of 2014 SPRA Saddle Bronc of the Year, and Hedrick’s wife, Jessica, was named the 2014 SPRA Contract Act of the Year for her daredevil trick riding performances. She has a repertoire that includes riding three horses at a time, standing on their backs and controlling them all from that position, while the horses lope around the arena and jump through fiery rings.
Hedrick was humble while discussing the awards, but Anderson and rodeo co-chairman Don Poe agree that the club’s choice in selecting Hedrick Rodeo Company was the right one.
“We had reasons for selecting Danny,” Anderson said. “It was really nice to have (those reasons) confirmed through their awards. We did bring in a good quality rodeo.”
The Hedricks have a long history of rodeo and have operated the stock contracting company for 11 years, he said. His family and the Statesboro Kiwanis Club have formed a friendly partnership in bringing the rodeo to town each spring, where sellout crowds enjoy the show, the food and vendors, Poe said.
This year the rodeo will take place April 17–18 at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fairgrounds on Georgia Highway 67 South. Advance tickets will go on sale March 15 at Anderson’s General Store in Statesboro. An option to buy tickets online will be announced at a later date, Poe said.
Adult tickets will cost $15, and children’s tickets will be $10.
Hedrick will bring new stock, a new trick rider (Marshall Greene) and a new clown, Roy Kozak.  There will be arena games and lots of local and other professional contestants in such events as barrel racing, steer wrestling, bull riding and team roping.
Greene holds world records in rope tricks from horseback.
Miss Rodeo USA Kirbi Allen from Arkansas will also make appearances in Statesboro before and during the rodeo.
Vendors will bring funnel cakes, barbecue sandwiches, Coca-Cola products, hamburgers and other favorites. Vendors will include a leather goods booth, T-shirts and belts and a jump house for kids. Rodeo fans who participate in a contest may very well win a chance to win a new car, Poe said.
He wouldn’t divulge details yet, but promised more information as the rodeo nears.
Vendors interested in having booths or spots at the rodeo may call Poe at (912) 541-0411.
