Stand-up comedy is not dead

Local comedians set to perform at Loco's this Tuesday, and they're willing to share the mic

Until now, there hasn’t been much in the way of a comedic presence in the Low Country. However, recently, a group of comedians who have dubbed themselves the Local Savannah Comedians has set out to change all that by performing all around the area — and Statesboro is next on the list for comedic infiltration.
This Tuesday, Jan. 31, a night of comedy will be hosted by Stephen Lacienski and will feature comedian Stephen Clark from Savannah, who will be performing at Loco’s along with D.J. Delgato from Hilton Head and Blair Renfrow from good ol’ Statesboro.
“I love making people laugh,” said Lacienski. “When I found Twitter, that’s when things started for me. I love the challenge of providing a setup and punch line in less than 140 characters.”
Lacienski said he likes jokes that are short and get right to the punch line.
On the other hand, as Tuesday night's featured funnyman, Clark describes himself as a “storyteller on stage.”
He says he grew up around funny people like his dad, mom and friends, “but I am the least funny among them,” Clark said with a laugh.
After graduating from college and moving to Savannah, he decided he wanted to give stand-up a go. However, at that time, Savannah was lacking quality open-mic nights and offered few opportunities for Clark to practice his stand-up.
A year ago, he gave it another shot and found the atmosphere had changed.
"The other comedians were welcoming and really broadening the comedy scene in downtown Savannah," he said.
Tuesday's event at Loco's will begin at 9 p.m. and is set to be a "hybrid" comedy night, which means that Clark and a few others from the comedians' group will be dishing out the jokes, but there also will be some open-mic time for anyone in the crowd brave enough to try their hand at getting a laugh from the audience.
The Local Savannah Comedians have performed in multiple cities around southeast Georgia including Beaufort, Hilton Head, Savannah, Hinesville and Statesboro, and they're not planning on stopping any time soon.
“We work better and have gone farther as a group than alone,” Clark commented about the nonofficial group of comedians.
The group currently schedules one to three shows per week featuring a different variety of comedians each night.
