Be careful with setting up your Amazon Alexa device.

What’s going on: A new app called Setup for Amazon Alexa has skyrocketed to the top of the iOS App Store charts. But the app is completely fake, 9to5Mac reports.

  • The app comes from the company One World Software, which has reportedly produced other shady apps in the past.
  • When you launch the app, it will ask you for your device’s serial number and your IP address, which opens you up to a number of cybersecurity threats.
  • The app ranked as high as No. 6 in the U.S. App Store under the "Utilities" category. The app already has close to 10,000 reviews and a 3.7-star rating.
How?: The app likely saw so much success because people received Alexa devices for Christmas, according to BGR.

Reaction: Neither Apple nor Amazon have taken any steps against the app, according to Engadget.

  • “If you or anyone you know is setting up a new Alexa device, be sure to steer clear of this scam,” Engadget reports.
Solution: You can download the real Amazon Alexa app to set up your device.
