Things you learn to love

February 03, 2010

When I graduated from Georgia Southern, I thought the world would be mine. It would bow and celebrate my fine collaboration of talents. I would have it all: fame, success, love – whatever I want would be at the tips of my fingertips.
Since I graduated, I’ve come to realize that it’s not  like that. At all. Instead, what awaits is a world that doesn’t really care about what you have to offer. They all regard you with the same glance and a smirk right before they  yell at you to get back in line. However, there are a few things you can look forward to after graduation.
    • Being an “adult.” You realize soon after you graduate that a lot of people don’t ever really grow up. It’s not a bad thing to own up to, but you have to come to terms with the fact that while you’re getting older you don’t always act your age.
    • Freedom isn’t free. Sure, your parents aren’t footing the bills anymore (at least, not all of them) and you can do what you want. However, those bills still have to be paid.
    • Getting married is just one big party. Don’t believe me? Think about it. You get presents. Everyone celebrates you. You get to eat, drink and be merry with your closest family and friends. Then you get a trip. Sounds like spring break and a birthday wrapped into one package – not to mention the process of registering for presents needs to be offered for every holiday. You’d never get another crazy present again.
    • Dating is tricky, even outside of graduation. Remember what I said about being an “adult?” Well, that doesn’t really help when it comes to dating. Finding someone down to earth and mature enough to accept when something isn’t going well, or isn’t just looking to be friends with benefits but no strings attached is pretty hard. At least, that’s what I’m told.
    • Friends don’t let friends fall asleep at work. It’s the same concept as the slogan friends don’t let friends drive drunk. The consequences of sleeping while working are: warnings, jokes, unemployment, etc. They’re not as deadly, but they’re just as serious. Once you’ve been caught sleeping on the job, you can kiss any references goodbye.
    • Everything changes; no exceptions. This one you’ll just learn to live with. The world can change in the blink of an eye, and it won’t ask you how you feel about it. All you can do is buckle up and get ready for a bumpy (and sometimes pretty fun) ride.
So there you have it. I hope you’re a little more prepared for life than I was when I was looking graduation in the eye.
