FANTASY FOOTBALL AWARDS 2009 MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Chris Johnson Running Back Tennessee Titans
How do you define value? The most popular argument is to see what happens if you take the player in question off your fantasy team.
While quarterbacks such as Drew Brees and Peyton Manning brought a high level of value and consistency to your squads this season. Johnson finished the fantasy season with 1,872 rushing yards, 483 receiving yards, and 14 TDs, ranking him #1 in almost any format for running backs.
Johnson benefited from a dismal Tennessee Titans offense that ranked 28th in offensive production, and when you have no reliable quarterback and no wideouts to speak of, an All-Pro player like this will shine. He is the clear #1 pick next season.
SLEEPER OF THE YEAR: Miles Austin/WR/Cowboys
Dallas' Miles Austin emerged big time this season and finishes a top-five fantasy wideout in standard-scoring leagues.
The fourth-year veteran opened the season behind Roy Williams on the depth chart and battled Patrick Crayton for the No. 2 spot. After four games, Austin had caught just five passes for 81 yards and a touchdown. Then came a week 5 date against the Chiefs in Kansas City.
Austin went off like a nuclear bomb against the Chiefs, hauling in 10 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns for a staggering 37 fantasy points. From then on Austin never looked back.
PICK UP OF THE YEAR: Ray Rice/RB/Ravens
Rice’s average draft position in a 10-team league entering the 2009 season was 5.01, which means he was usually selected at the start of the fifth round.
Things might be a little different next season. The second-year running back out of Rutgers burst onto the scene in 2009. Rice is the definition of a dual-threat back, Rice possesses great balance and excellent lower-body strength.
For those of you who play in a keeper league, this guy will be the cornerstone of your team next season and beyond.
