Averitt STARS set to go 'Under the Sea'

June 26, 2018

Join Ariel and Sebastian under the sea in the beloved Disney musical production, "The Little Mermaid" from July 19 to July 21 at 7:30 p.m. and July 22 at 3 p.m. in the Emma Kelly Theater.
In a magical underwater kingdom, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home — and her fins — behind and live in the world above. But first she’ll have to defy her father, make a deal with the evil sea witch, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she’s the girl behind the enchanting voice he’s been seeking.
Directed by Georgia Southern Associate Professor of Theatre Lisa Abbott, the cast of this underwater adventure includes Pinewood High senior Elizabeth McCooey as Ariel, Statesboro Voice finalist Joey Bielik as Eric and Georgia Southern theatre student Peyton Rowe as Ursula.
“We have an amazing cast,” said Abbott. “From a 6-foot-3 man playing a crab to people acting as seahorses, they are simply stunning across the board.”
Written by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright Doug Wright, this beloved tale features the unforgettable songs “Part of Your World,” “Kiss the Girl” and the Academy Award-winning Best Original Song, “Under the Sea,” with a score composed by Academy Award winners Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, and lyricist Glenn Slater.
Choreographed by Statesboro Youth Ballet Artistic Director Taylor Ellen and Georgia Southern Theatre alumna Kelsey Alexandria, Abbott says the most challenging part of the production is making the audience feel like they are actually under the sea.
“The first question you have to answer when adapting Mermaid is how you’re going to do ‘underwater,'” said Abbott. “Theater is a great art form to explore what it means to be human. A lot of the setting is being communicated through the actor’s physicality. Whether you’re playing a fish or a crab or a mermaid, it’s still about the human condition.”
Based on the Hans Christian Andersen story and the classic Disney film, this fishy fable is sure to delight audiences of all ages.Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at www.averittcenterforthearts.org or by calling (912) 212-2787.
