Here are the best and worst advertisers for families in 2017

The Parents Television Council wants to make sure you’re not watching any harmful advertisements or commercials.

The company released its annual 2017 Best and Worst Advertiser List this week. The rankings come just as national brands will share their Christmas and holiday commercials to lure customers to their stores.

The council said in a press release that the company wants to make sure families know which TV programs, commercials and advertisers are safe for families.

“When families head out for Christmas and holiday shopping, we hope they’ll consider rewarding companies who made it onto our Best List, as those are the brands that have demonstrated a corporate commitment to underwriting TV programming that is generally safe for children and families to watch,” said Parents Television Council President Tim Winter.

This year’s report found that several advertisers who were once on the “worst” side of the list moved over to the “best side,” specifically Toyota and McDonald’s.

The Parents Television Council compiled the rankings based on how many ads competitors ran on family-appropriate shows versus how many they ran on shows not acceptable for most family-friendly audiences.

Best: Mazda, Chrysler, Toyota, Ford, Kia

Worst: Honda, Subaru, BMW, Nissan

Cell phone providers

Best: AT&T, Verizon

Worst: Sprint, T-Mobile


Best: Procter & Gamble, Smucker’s, Hershey

Worst: Unilever, Mondelez, Mars


Best: Amazon, Apple, Google

Worst: Samsung, Microsoft

Credit cards

Best: MasterCard, Capital One

Worst: Discover, American Express

Department stores

Best: TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Home Goods, Sears

Worst: Macy’s, Kohl’s

Discount retail

Best: Walmart

Worst: Target, Kmart

Fast food

Best: McDonald’s, Starbucks, Dairy Queen, Chipotle

Worst: Burger King, Wendy’s, Subway, Yum! Brands (like Taco Bell, KFC)

Soft drinks

Best: Coca-Cola

Worst: Red Bull
