Late-night television host Jimmy Fallon opened up about the recent backlash against him in an interview with The New York Times.

Fallon, host of “The Tonight Show,” said his fans have a right to be mad over how he treated President Donald Trump in interviews.

As The Washington Post reported, Fallon often featured Trump as a guest. One interview included Fallon rubbing Trump’s hair, sparking critics to ponder whether or not Fallon was doing the American people justice because he wasn’t asking tough questions.

“They have a right to be mad,” Fallon told The Times. “If I let anyone down, it hurt my feelings that they didn’t like it. I got it.”

Fallon said he didn’t ruffle Trump’s hair to make light of the president, as many critics suggest.

In fact, he said he thought it’d present the opposite effect.

“I didn’t do it to humanize him. I almost did it to minimize him. I didn’t think that would be a compliment.”
