Last Friday, the local band Those Cats hosted a fundraising concert at Gnat’s Landing for Nick Ward, a Georgia Southern University student who was hit by a car while walking home two weeks ago. The show was free; however, 100 percent of the merchandise sales, which included T-shirts, bracelets and posters, went directly to the Ward family to help with hospital expenses.
A raffle, with tickets going for $5, was also held for a chance to win a Chris Mitchell electric guitar and case, valued at $859.
Playing to a packed house, Those Cats did not disappoint as they delivered the usual contagiously energetic yet smooth sounds that have become their trademark. A majority of those in attendance were close friends and co-workers of Ward, an employee of Loco’s Grill and Pub. Many fellow GSU Eagles and members of the community also were there to support one of their own. Despite the somber reason behind the concert, there still remained an undercurrent of happiness, a feeling of unity — and hope.
GSU student Madison Rozakos spent the night selling merchandise to help Ward, a high school friend of hers.
“This is more than a benefit,” said Rozakos. “Nick is our friend. He is our family. When life has us down, questioning fate and reality, all we do is take a moment and ask ourselves, ‘What would Nick want us to be doing?’
“The answer is blatantly obvious. Nick loves to jam. He loves music, he loves people, and most of all, he loves life. This is us doing exactly what Nick would want. Though he may not physically be here, Nick is here in spirit and in rhythm. The music only continues. This is Nick Ward.”
Ward is currently a patient at Memorial University Medical Center, where he remains in a coma. Donations for Ward and his family are welcome. For more information, please contact Those Cats through the band's Facebook page
