In conjunction with an annual holiday celebration, the City of Statesboro will kick off the season of giving with a run to raise money to buy gifts for hospital patients.
Registration is now underway for the city’s first “Run the ’Boro 5K,” hosted by the City of Statesboro and Georgia Municipal Association.
The event will take place in Downtown Statesboro, near City Hall, at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7.
According to Jeff Grant, the city’s director of human resources, all proceeds from the run will support the Georgia Regional Hospital in Savannah, as part of the Mayors’ Christmas Motorcade, and the Georgia Cities Foundation.
The Mayors’ Motorcade provides gifts to patients at partner hospitals, and the Georgia Cities Foundation assists cities in efforts to revitalize and enhance their respective downtowns.
“We are very excited. We are looking forward to it,” Grant said. “We are tying the event in with the downtown celebration, which already has the great music, the vendors and the annual chili cook-off.”
“It is good for the city,” he said. “We didn’t just advertise this locally; we advertised it across the state. It will be good for tourism and for featuring Downtown Statesboro to everyone.”
Registration for the 5K — for both walkers and runners — is $25 per person. You can register online
here or by picking up a registration form at City Hall. Registration will not be allowed on race day.
The 3.1-mile route will begin at City Hall, loop north of the starting point before following Savannah Avenue, East Jones Street and eventually, the Willie McTell Trail to the finish. Roads along the route will be closed to vehicles during the event.
Participants will enter the race in one of 14 age groups. An awards ceremony, emceed by WJCL’s Frank “The Big Guy” Sulkowski, will be held at 7 p.m. to recognize the fastest racers in each division and overall.
The race is expected to take about one hour.
