Hello, Statesboro

August 25, 2010

    Hello, Statesboro!
Thanks for picking up this week’s issue of Connect. As this is my first issue as editor, I'm thrilled you have decided to check us out.
You might notice a few changes here and there. Hopefully they will be changes you will enjoy.
Jake Hallman, the interim editor, has done an excellent job kicking off the redesign — you might have noticed some changes in typography and style— and improving content. Expect to see more changes in those areas.
This is the magazine you will want to make a part of your weekend plan-making strategy. In this issue we have plenty of ideas for you on our events calendar on pages 12 and 13. You could go out to hear a cool local band or try a great recipe at your weekend barbeque — see page 10. Also, Pub Crawl is back for a second week on pages 22 and 23 to help all of you who are new in town find your way around.
I hope you find this week’s cover story particularly interesting as it is a subject I hold close and dear to my heart — karaoke. I can find little more entertaining than getting a group of tone-deaf friends together to have a few drinks and sing classic songs like “Don’t Stop Believing” and “Oops, I Did It Again.”
With karaoke, it doesn’t really matter how great a singer you are. I mean having a great voice helps, but mainly it depends on your song choices and showmanship.
Some of my fondest memories have been made at karaoke nights. I used to have a bunch of friends that lived nearby, who liked to go out and sing as much as I do.
One of the most memorable performances was by two of my friends singing "I Wanna Talk About Me," by Toby Keith. By the end of the song the entire bar was laughing and singing along.
My personal tips for kicking-A at karaoke are simple. Pick a song most people know. Know most of the words — not just the chorus — and have fun. Check out our story on page 6 for more tips on how to own the mic.
Since this is my first Connect column, I suppose it would be appropriate to share a little bit about myself with our fantastic readers — an introduction, if you will.
I’m a girly girl. No this does not mean we will have pink covers all of the time, but, yes, there likely will be a few. What it does mean is there probably will be a few more stories about shopping and columns about shoes, purses and hats scattered throughout the year.
While we’re talking about hats, if you are a Southern student walking around with a UGA cap on and have no ties with UGA, take it off.
You are in Eagle Nation, and it’s just time to face it. You know, even if you do have ties with UGA, show a little support for your school at least be wearing a GATA t-shirt. Actually, I just changed my mind. UGA-cap-wearing GSU student, please leave the UGA stuff in your dorm room.  Thanks.
I love Eagle football. I have since I was a student at GSU, and thanks to Herald sports editor Matt Yogus, I’m starting to think these other sports are pretty cool too. Yeah, that’s right, friends, there are sports besides football. If you have never been to a GSU sporting event you should definitely go to one. Take your friends; you’ll have a great time.
I also enjoy some of the more geeky things out there. You might find me at home on a Tuesday night painting my toenails and watching “Return of the Jedi” or “Supernatural” — season 5 releases to DVD Sept.7, by the way. Or you might find me listening to “Round 3” or “Geek Out Loud” on my iPod. This might qualify me for the interview process to potentially enter the land of geekdom, but I just like to think this makes me a well-rounded girl.
Hopefully this will translate into a magazine that also is well rounded. At least that is one of my goals.
Again, thanks for picking up this week’s issue. We hope you enjoy it.
