Georgia Southern students will get a chance to be the "team behind the team" as part of the Georgia Southern University Student Eagle Club this fall.
With the start of the fall athletic season just around the corner, the GSU Athletic Foundation and the Alumni Association are partnering to building on traditions like yellow school buses, beautiful Eagle Creek, “the prettiest little stadium in America” and the six national championship flags that fly over Allen E. Paulson Stadium with a new one — the Student Eagle Club, designed specifically for current GSU students
“The Student Eagle Club is designed to enlist Georgia Southern’s nearly 20,000 students to cheer on the Eagles, providing the ultimate homefield advantage,” said Lucas Stuckey, director of annual giving for the GSU Athletic Foundation.
"The ultimate goal of the club is to draw more students to Georgia Southern athletic events. If just half of our student body came to Paulson stadium each Saturday, that would be an additional 10,000 fans in the stands.”
The Student Eagle Club offers students reserved seating at all Georgia Southern football, basketball and baseball games, and will also host socials where Georgia Southern coaches will speak to members about the upcoming season.
Students receive Student Eagle Club T-shirts, membership cards, and auto decals along with a 10 percent discount at The University Store on apparel and school supplies.
Membership costs $20 annually, and students can sign up for the Student Eagle Club in the ticket office at Allen E. Paulson Stadium during the first and second weeks of classes.
The club will meet on Aug. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the Bishop Field House. Membership packets will be handed out and GSU head football coach Jeff Monken will preview the upcoming season. The club will also provide free food and members can earn their first reward points of the year.
“I'm personally challenging Georgia Southern’s student section to be our 12th man this fall,” said Monken.
“I want them there early, I want them to be loud and I want the other team to feel like they are unwelcome visitors in our house. This isn’t just about being loud, it’s about being a proud member of the Eagle Nation. I want to see our students out in full force waving the blue and the white. Just like the Eagles on the field, I expect nothing but full effort until the final whistle blows."
The Student Eagle Club first began accepting members during basketball season last year. It rallied upcoming freshmen during the university’s freshman orientation (SOAR) sessions, and Stuckey is excited about the possibilities of growing the club’s membership.
“The Student Eagle Club adds a new way for students to give their all and participate at Eagle athletic events," he said.
