When Kimberly Bennett saw what was happening in Haiti on her television, her heart went out to the victims. Bennett said one question kept coming to her mind: "What can I do (to help) all the way over here in Statesboro?"
Now Bennett, co-owner of Buffalo’s, is lending a helping hand to the same victims.
It’s called Taste of the Boro, and it takes place on Saturday, Feb. 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Buffalo’s. Bennett has rallied a good mix of help from local restaurants, like Quiznos.
"Well my friend Christian Bennett who owns Buffalos came and asked me (to participate)," said Brett Lanier of Quiznos. "I thought it was for a good cause so I had no problem doing it. It was good for my business and for the community."
The complete list of participants are: Brusters, Mellow Mushroom, Ruby Tuesday, Shane’s Rib Shack, Quiznos, 119 Chops, El Sombrero, Snooky’s and Buffalo's Southwest Cafe.
And they won't be just bringing one thing each for this.
" We’re going to bring a variety of everything we sell in the restaurant," said Lanier. "Sandwiches, maybe a thing of soup...a sample of everything."
Bennett was extremely proud of the number of people willing to help.
"There are so many nice people in this town that want to help," said Bennett. "When I called (restaurant owners) to feel them out and see if they would do it, they were like ‘Oh yes, what can I do and what can I bring.’"
For $10, you can fill your plate to the top with samples of food from the local establishments. All proceeds go to the Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund.
It won't all just be about food for the event.
"I’ve got face painting. I’ve got a balloon artist coming. Chris and Ashlee Mitchell are going to sing," said Bennett. "The Fire Department is bringing out one of their fire trucks. There’s going to be a dirt race track car they usually race at Oglethorpe Race Track."
As for the local businesses, Bennett said there was a great demand for people that wanted to help but just didn't have the means to do so. Anyone can help by showing up at Buffalo's with $10 for a buffet-style setting where you can pile your food high and not have to feel guilty about it.
