We have reached the final two weeks of the regular season.
While the Georgia Southern men are fighting to find any kind of momentum at all, the Lady Eagles may just be picking up the head of steam they need going into the Southern Conference tournament.
The ladies are currently tied with Davidson for the fifth spot in the standings. But if the season ended today, they would be seeded sixth and would have to play on the first day instead of enjoying that crucial first round bye. The good news: Georgia Southern has three games remaining—two of which are at home. The lone road game: at Davidson. Then fourth-place Appalachian State comes to Hanner for the regular season finale.
The Lady Eagles hit a bit of a speed bump last weekend after winning six of seven. Chattanooga and Samford both came into Hanner and handed Georgia Southern a loss. But the Lady Eagle ship seems to have been righted for the moment. Southern went on the road this past weekend and defeated first-place Charleston. They followed that up with a victorious trip to Furman Monday night. Now things are clicking. Hopefully. The Lady Eagles have used a smothering press defense to notch these last two wins. Southern will need similar effort in its remaining games to grab that fifth seed. With App, Davidson and Southern all within a game and a half of each other, we’ll save the tiebreaker scenarios for next week when the picture is a bit clearer.
Meanwhile, the men should be well rested after playing just one game over a 10-day stretch. That one game was a loss at Appalachian State on Saturday. The Eagles also haven't played a home game since Jan. 30.
The last five games for the Eagles include three at Hanner, and four of the five are against teams with losing records. In fact, the Eagles will face the bottom three teams from the north division along with Wofford and Furman in these last couple of weeks. Maybe this is the stretch of games Southern needs to finally put together a few wins and build some confidence. Georgia Southern is better than its 6-20 record shows. And it sure would be a lot of fun to surprise some people in the SoCon tournament.
It will be interesting to see how these next few weeks play out for both teams.
I made the comment last week that it was hard to think about baseball when my windshield is frozen most mornings. Then we got over two inches of snow in Statesboro exactly one week before opening day. Baseball season is upon us whether we are ready or not. Georgia Southern tied for first with Elon in the SoCon Preseason Coaches’ Poll while coming in second behind the Phoenix in the media poll.
This weekend brings defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Tennessee Tech to J.I. Clements Stadium to open the season. Opening day is Friday with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. The two teams will face off again on Saturday and Sunday. Next week, the homestand continues as Georgia Tech comes to town Tuesday and Wednesday for the Eagles’ home portion of this always-entertaining series. Last season, Southern and Tech split the four game season series.
It will be a full weekend of Eagle sports, so come enjoy plenty of Friday’s baseball action and Saturday’s basketball doubleheader. There is no snow in the forecast.
