The Eagle Resolution

Tattler discusses his resolution for Georgia Southern University athletics

Where did 2009 go? Maybe it’s just me, but didn’t this year just start? And what about the 2000s? It does not at all seem like the Y2K scare and the end of the 90s were a full decade ago. Does that make me old? Don’t answer that.
Anyway, as unbelievable as it is and as much as I wish time would slow down, 2010 is here and we must accept it.
Before Christmas we took the opportunity to look back at what Georgia Southern athletics gave us to be thankful for in 2009. And with this week being the time for New Year’s resolutions, let’s use this final Tattler of the year to prepare ourselves for 2010 and look at what we as the Eagle Nation can do to improve our fanhood in the coming year.
The first and most important thing we can all do is go to games. And bring friends. Go show your support for football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and all the other programs where Eagles can be found competing. These student athletes work hard to represent the university we all love and they deserve to see blue-and-white-bleeding supporters in the stands.
If you don’t currently contribute to the Eagle Fund, become a member and support your university. You can join for as a little as ten bucks a month. And they can even set you up to pay monthly so you don’t have one big payment to make. If you are an Eagle Fund member, the ‘Give 110%’ campaign is a good way to gradually increase your support.
Also, don’t stop with just your membership. Recruit your friends and fellow alumni to give. Bug them, annoy them, and do whatever it takes to get them involved. If we want Georgia Southern to reach its full potential, we all have to do our part. And if you are a student or new graduate, the Eagle Fund has programs for you too. The Young Alumni program allows recent graduates a chance to join at a reduced rate. Plus, you get a season pass to all sports. You can’t beat that.
For those who have graduated, the Alumni Association is another great avenue to support your alma mater. Individual membership dues are only $40 per year. So for just over $13 a month, you can be a member of both the Georgia Southern Athletic Foundation and the Alumni Association. Both organizations are crucial to the life of our university and depend on our support.
There are other ways to support Georgia Southern in addition to donating directly to one of the fundraising arms of the university. You can do something as small as putting a tag or sticker on your car or wearing a Georgia Southern shirt or hat. Anything that publicizes our Eagles helps the home team. The more the Georgia Southern brand is seen, the more valuable our diplomas become. Every little bit helps.
So I challenge everyone to go buy a sticker or tag to put on your car. And while you’re at it, grab a shirt or hat to wear. If we can get every student, alum, and friend of the university doing just a little bit more to promote Georgia Southern, we will see our university soar to new heights.
So here’s to a great year for the Blue and White. Let’s get this new decade rolling in the right direction for Georgia Southern. I am excited to look back in a few years at the 2010s and see the leaps and bounds by which my alma mater grew and prospered.
But not too excited. Time is flying by too quickly as it is.
