Give 'em what they want

The Averitt Center has a ton of great gifts

December 16, 2009

Do you find yourself wondering what to get that particular someone for Christmas? You know, the person who has everything?
The Averitt Center has several options! The Center’s gift shop is full of original, one-of-a-kind art work, jewelry and more. The gift shop is open Tuesday – Friday from 1:00 – 5:30 p.m.
The Main Gallery is currently exhibiting the artwork of Birmingham, AL artist, Connie Crowe. The majority of pieces in the exhibit are for sale and reasonably priced. Ms. Crowe’s angels are holiday inspired and her colorful roosters and other works are reminiscent of French Country style. Her freestyle pottery pieces are fun and whimsical. The Main Gallery is open to the public Tuesday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
The Emma Kelly Theater has some fantastic performances during the spring of 2010! Tickets for all Averitt Center produced events are on sale now.
“Tickets make great stocking stuffers!” said Tim Chapman, Averitt Center Executive Director. “Purchasing early gives you the advantage of choosing your favorite seats, making dinner reservations and planning for the babysitter for a romantic evening out.”
The Emma Kelly Theater gets started in early January with a celebration of Elvis’ 75th birthday on Jan. 8, 2010.  On Jan. 23, Bill Hatcher’s niece, Courtenay Collins, a Broadway vocalist, returns to Statesboro with her friend, Robert Ray, in the 2 for Broadway performance.
February brings three very special events – Route 66, the Broadway Musical, on the 6th , Piano Romantcio on the 12th  and The Funeral Club the 26th – 28th.
Route 66 features hit songs from the ‘50s and ‘60s including Little Old Lady from Pasadena, Fun, Fun, Fun, I Get Around, GTO and, of course, Route 66.
Piano Romantico features Dr. Michael Braz in a solo piano performance. This concert will feature romantic standards, some original pieces and a time for audience requests. Dr. Braz’s new album will also be on sale.  This is a perfect Valentine’s Day event! Make your plans early.
The Funeral Club is an Averitt STARs Community Theater production. Directed by Mical Whitaker, The Funeral Club is the story five remarkable women battling to keep their privately owned, small town funeral home out of the hands of a greedy corporation. Mirroring the plight of locally owned businesses everywhere, this story will inspire you on many levels.
On March 6, the Emma Kelly Theater proudly welcomes multiple Dove Award Winner Babbie Mason to the stage!  Mason has shared the stage with Dr. Billy Graham and Presidents Carter, Bush and Ford, and she is excited to offer a one night concert experience here in Statesboro. Be sure to purchase tickets early for this show!
In conjunction with the Main Gallery Exhibit of Norman Rockwells’ Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn Collection, Tony Phillips Productions brings a community theater version of Tom Sawyer to the Emma Kelly Theater stage. As part of Community Reads 2010 – A Tom Sawyer Adventure, there are several activities at the Averitt Center and the Statesboro Regional Library celebrating the works of Mark Twain and Norman Rockwell.
In April, the theater will be reprising the sell-out production Driving Miss Daisy. Featuring local talent Carol Thompson, Mical Whitaker and Alan Tyson, this performance will sell out again. Don’t miss it this year!
On May 1, Statesboro has a chance to explore the Indian art of kuchpudi dance. The Atlanta-based Academy of Kuchipudi brings this highly revered traditional dance form to the Emma Kelly Theater. This unique performance is not to be missed.
Finally, on May 7th, celebrate Mother’s Day with a collection of solo performances in song, story-telling, poetry and more by women celebrating all stages and phases of life. This is a perfect celebration of the unique bond of womanhood – a great Mother’s Day gift.
Truly, the Averitt Center offers something for everyone in the spring performance season. And your Christmas shopping just got easier – one stop at the Averitt Center Gift Shop / Box Office and you’ll have something for every person on your gift list!
