I never really realized it until I was on the market for one, but tacky Christmas sweaters are expensive. Don’t believe me? Take a look on eBay and find one. They look cheap until the last minute, when your bid of $20 (and yes, that’s $20 for a tacky sweater you’ll wear for one party and not mentioning the shipping and handling costs) gets put to shame.
It’s definitely the holidays, and no Christmas is complete without watching for the tacky Christmas sweaters. They come in all shapes and sizes, and they bring a smile to anyone’s face upon seeing them. I’m pretty sure nearly everyone has played the spot the tacky sweater game.
The holidays are the prime time for it. They come out in such force that it’s almost like we’re at war with them. Frumpy and with the most absurd designs you’ve ever seen, they’re likely to make you want to just point and laugh. Just remember to be nice. We’ve all been there at one point or another in our lives.
I was browsing eBay when I spotted several tacky sweater options for the bargain-low price of two bucks. I thought it was a little odd there wasn’t an autobuy price. However, I soon discovered why.
In the final hour, I was outbid about 20 times. The ridiculous-looking sweater sold for an astonishing $35, plus shipping and handling. I noticed that a lot of the sweaters were being sold by the same people.
And I have to admit that they’re making bank. This could become a new seasonal way to make some extra cash if you’re really strapped for it. Don’t just let those sweaters go to the yard sale for a few bucks. Wait until Christmas and throw them up on eBay, then wait for the bidding war.
It’s not just sweaters, either. It’s ties, hats and everything. Apparently there are people out there who have money to spend, and this is a partially untapped market.
The fiancé spent around $30 for his tacky sweater. Thankfully, mine came cheap (his mother isn’t exactly known for her fashion savvy, so she handed some over to me free of charge). My ensemble is pretty impressive: jingle bells on the sweater with matching shoe laces and an overly decorated shirt to go underneath.
It’s pretty much the best tacky Christmas sweater ever.
And it’s all for the Connect Statesboro Tacky Christmas Sweater Party at Gnat’s Landing on Friday, Dec. 18. The fun starts at 9 p.m. and lasts until close. Come dressed in your favorite heinous mistake that ever got thrown onto cloth and compete for prizes.
